What Is PIPA Testing and Why Does It Matter?
If you’re hiring inflatables for a party, school event or public fun day, you may hear the term PIPA testing mentioned. This page explains what PIPA testing is, why it matters, and how it helps keep inflatable hire safe for everyone.
What PIPA testing means
PIPA stands for the Professional Inflatable Play Association. PIPA testing is an independent inspection process used across the inflatable hire industry to check that inflatables meet recognised safety standards.
During a PIPA test, an inflatable is examined for things such as overall condition, stitching, seams, anchor points, netting, zips and safe access areas. If it passes, it is issued with a PIPA tag and certificate showing the test date and expiry.
Why PIPA testing is important
PIPA testing helps confirm that an inflatable has been assessed by a trained inspector and is suitable for public use. This is especially important for schools, councils and community groups, where duty of care and public safety are key considerations.
Many venues and local authorities will only allow inflatables that are PIPA-tested, as this forms part of their risk assessment and insurance requirements.
How often inflatables are tested
PIPA testing is carried out annually. Each inflatable must be re-tested every year to remain valid. If an inflatable fails a test or needs repair, it must be fixed and re-checked before it can be used again.
Alongside annual testing, inflatables should also be visually checked on a regular basis to ensure they remain in good condition between tests.

What PIPA testing does not replace
While PIPA testing is an important part of inflatable safety, it does not replace the need for correct setup, supervision and sensible use. Adult supervision is always required for children using inflatables, and rules should be followed throughout the hire.
